Maya's disease is genetic. It affects all systems of her body as
well as the way her body makes and uses energy. She has difficulty
with balance and communication and sometimes needs assistance walking.
She is also hearing and visually impaired; and she has suffered
strokes.
Maya lives with several issues, including a tube in her
stomach for venting, another tube in her small intestine for
medication, and a central line for receiving nutrition
through a vein in her chest. Maya also has an ileostomy,
since she had her colon removed, and a vesicostomy, so she
can use a catheter through a hole in her belly. She has
neuropathies, seizures, and an immune problem for which she
receives IV infusions every three weeks. She needs blood
transfusions frequently also.
BUT, in spite of all
this, Maya still loves to play and laugh. And Maya's mom
says "She's never met a person she couldn't make smile!"
